Elements and Performance Criteria

Range Statement

PPE includes one (1) or more of the following:

safety glasses

face and head protection

protective footwear

protective clothing

respiratory protection

ear protection

gloves

Surfaces include three (3) or more of the following:

hardwood timber

softwood timber

medium density fibre board (MDF)

veneered board

metal

composites

Tools and equipment include one (1) or more of the following:

measuring tapes

hammer

nail punch

liquid containers

brushes

scrapers

file

scourers

abrasive papers

sanding blocks

steam iron

power sanders/vacuum dust extraction system

clamps


Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

following work instructions, procedures and safe work practices

identifying and interpreting project sheets, specifications, drawings and other relevant information in preparing surfaces

applying safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including the use of PPE

identifying and selecting materials to be used in the work process

using mathematical ideas and techniques to complete measurements, including calculating area and estimating material requirements

using tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner

preparing surfaces to include three (3) or more of the following:

solid hardwood

solid softwood

veneered board

MDF

metal

composites

inspecting finished surfaces against quality requirements

minimising wastage of resources, including materials, time and money

communicating and working effectively and safely with others.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE

types, properties and characteristics of coatings

surface preparation materials and techniques

capabilities, limitations and safety requirements of tools and equipment

hazardous substances, materials and precautions to be observed in preparing surfaces, including the review of the MSDS for each material to be used

sequences in relation to the application and removal of surface coatings
